Project Roma Areas- Awareness Workshops in Roma Settlements

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

There are 34 Roma settlements registered in the Pomurje region. One of the critical areas of the "Strategy for the Development of the Roma Community in Pomurje until 2020" is the living conditions and communal regulation of settlements. In the past, Roma settlements did not receive continuous care or targeted development. This is reflected in the unpermitted construction, poor utility infrastructure, and inappropriate property inheritance. Some live below the minimum living standards - in barracks, containers, trailers and the like.

In many cases, the Roma are not even granted the right of residence; some settlements are illegal and built on foreign land. The purpose of the project is to raise awareness of Roma Pomurje youth and the dangers of unregulated living conditions, unpermitted construction, and the importance of responsible and rational behaviour in the Roma settlements and beyond. As part of the project, workshops were carried out in various Roma settlements in Pomurje, and, according to the Strategy, Roma settlements with special housing issues were selected. There are six such settlements registered: Krašči-Lejs (Cankova), Dolič (Kuzma), Turnisce, Beltinci, Dokležovje, and Dolga vas. Through various informational activities and promotional materials, we also reached the general public and professional public. In the implementation of workshops and certain promotional events, we cooperated with the Institute for Assistance to Students of Vulnerable Groups, Cankova, which is a Roma institution. All activities were carried out as part of "Surroundings Month 2017".

Target groups: Roma children and young people, the general public, and the professional public.
